Marc Bossuyt, Ph.D., J.D.

Marc Bossuyt, Ph.D., J.D., holds degrees from Ghent State University in Belgium (J.D.) and Geneva University in Switzerland (Ph.D.), along with a Diploma of International and Comparative Law of Human Rights from the International Institute of Human Rights, Strasbourg, France, and a Certificate of International Relations from the Bologna Centre of the School of Advanced International Studies of the Johns Hopkins University. He has been a professor at Antwerp University, Belgium, since 1977, where he specializes in international law and the law of international organizations, including the international protection of human rights and international humanitarian law. He has held numerous professional positions in Belgium and at the UN, including that of UN Human Rights Officer (1975–77); secretary-general of the Belgian Society of International Law (1978–1990); vice-chairman (1986) and chairman (1989) of the UN Commission on Human Rights; vice-president (1990–2000) of the Executive Council of the International Institute of Human Rights at Strasbourg; Belgian Commissioner-General for Refugees and Stateless Persons (1987–97); and (since 1997) judge at the Belgian Court of Arbitration (“Cour d’arbitrage”). He is also a member of the editorial staff of the Revue belge de droit International (Belgian Review of International Law).
